Using IT for Success

Using IT for Success

Date: 12th June 2008

Situated in the shadow of St David’s Cathedral, the Pembrokeshire Machinery Ring (PMR) was formed in 1991.

Run as a member owned co-operative, PMR brings together farmers and agricultural suppliers and then acts as an interchange that matches up those with a specific task with members that have the necessary equipment to complete the job. This reduces machinery investment costs and the associated overheads for the members and increases the potential market for contract work.

PMR also supplies relief staff and services.  Members have a wide ranging list of abilities: herdsmen, sheep shearing, house sitting and even a bagpipe player!

Currently there are over 1100 members and this has provided the organization with increased buying power for fuels and animal feeds. Right from the outset PMR recognized the importance of IT within the organization.

They invested in a specialized database that copes with all day to day aspects of the business: membership, history, bookings, invoicing availability of machinery and length of hire.  Coupled with this is Sage accounting.

Graham Perkins, the Manager of PMR realized that the businesses reliance on IT necessitated dedicated and expert support and this prompted him to approach Telemat.

Based in Newcastle Emlyn, Telemat offer a complete range of IT operations to businesses throughout the UK. WWMR entered into a Service Level Agreement with Telemat and have not looked back since.

Graham said ‘Telemat showed an understanding of our business from the start – particularly costs!’  He went on to say ‘It is really important for us to be able to continue working safe in the knowledge that our IT is secure and reliable.  Telemat will keep us up and running and also carry out regular preventative maintenance.’

Telemat’s maintenance agreements include unlimited telephone and eMail support as well as on site visits and remote access support.

‘The introduction of Broadband was the single most important aspect in our business’ Graham said. ‘Telemat installed a service that allows our Field Support staff to access our network and operate as if they were in the office with us.  They also monitor our systems to prevent Internet attacks and that backups are operating correctly.’

Graham concluded ‘Having a Maintenance Agreement with Telem@ has ensured that we have the knowledge and experience on board to look after our investment and we can use our time in running our business.’
